Alabama Power Hosts Education Event at the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama
Over 200 high school students to learn about engineering, automotive careers

Birmingham, Ala. (Apr. 20) – Hundreds of students from area high schools will come together at Barber Motorsports Park for the fifth annual Alabama Power: Track to Your Future education event, hosted at the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama.

The event on Thursday, April 23 will include representatives from Alabama Power’s Electric Transportation group and the Verizon IndyCar Series. Students will hear from experts about opportunities available to help them determine their career paths.  Alabama Power experts will discuss electric transportation and how math and science connect to careers related to automobiles and the automotive industry. Verizon IndyCar Series drivers and race crews will also participate and discuss their career paths and the role education played in their careers. Students can also enjoy a close-up look at an emission-free, all-electric sports car and a high-performance Indy car.

Sage Karam, driver of the #8 Target Chip Ganassi Dallara, will be the special guest at Thursday’s event. Karam, currently the youngest driver in the IndyCar Series, won the 2013 Indy Lights Championship. Karam will be competing Sunday in the Verizon IndyCar Series race of the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama, April 24-26.

After the presentations, students will be divided into groups to build pinewood derby boxcars.  The students will be assisted by Alabama Power engineers in designing and assembling their boxcars, along with learning how design can affect the speed of the car. After the cars are assembled, the students will compete to see which car performs the best.

Students will also receive gift boxes, each containing a ticket to the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama, and an event-logoed T-shirt. Alabama Power is also providing USB bands that contain information on electric transportation, career path resources and contact information for career counseling.

“We truly value our relationship with Alabama Power,” said George Dennis, president of Zoom Motorsports, the exclusive event promoter of Barber Motorsports Park. “Their dedication to investing in the lives of children through this educational event is remarkable and we thank them for their continued support and partnership.”

Alabama Power: Track to Your Future will also focus on the growing interest in “greener” vehicles that produce fewer emissions and reduce the nation’s dependence on foreign oil. Alabama Power continues to be a leader in promoting greener electric transportation and is working to educate customers about the expanding options related to plug-in electric vehicles.

Alabama Power: Track to Your Future will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 23 in the hospitality tent across from Lot D at Turn 14 at Barber Motorsports Park. Media attending the event should arrive by 9:45 a.m. and should email Angel Hufham ahufham@brunoeventteam.com to request credentials.
