Atlanta Gas Light Company to Reshape Base Charge Rates
New Seasonal Rates in Response to Customer Concerns .... Marketers to Apply A $14 Credit to Customer Bills in February

ATLANTA

Atlanta Gas Light Company will implement a seasonal rate plan which natural gas marketers will roll out during the February 2001 billing cycle. The new rate plan, which was approved this fall by the Georgia Public Service Commission, will make billing follow the traditional winter and summer usage patterns.

Currently, Atlanta Gas Light Company charges customers for distribution service via its base charge, which is passed along to customers at the same rate for each month (i.e., a straight fixed variable rate). For customers, the new rates will result in higher base charges in the winter and lower base charges in the summer. Interstate pipeline transportation charges and the commodity cost of natural gas will not be affected by the new rate design.

"This is a result of the Georgia Public Service Commission and Atlanta Gas Light working together to respond to customer concerns about high gas bills during the summer," said Clayton Preble, Senior Vice President of External Affairs at AGL Resources , parent company of Atlanta Gas Light.

To ease the transition to this seasonal base rate design, each residential customer will receive a refund of $14 a month from the Universal Service Fund in February and March, 2001. In addition, each customer with senior citizen discount status in the Atlanta Gas Light records will also receive a refund of $10 a month for January, February and March, 2001.

Atlanta Gas Light Company is the largest natural gas distributor in the Southeast and provides delivery service to more than 1.8 million customers in Georgia, Chattanooga, Tennessee and the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. It also is the primary subsidiary of AGL Resources, a regional energy holding company with operations throughout the Southeast. Although natural gas distribution is AGL Resources' core business, it also is engaged in other energy-related businesses, including retail energy marketing, retail and wholesale propane sales and customer care services for energy marketers.
