ATLANTA

Georgia Natural Gas (GNG) today announced a significant reduction in the variable rate it charges residential and senior, low-income customers.

Effective today, February 1, 2001, the new variable rate is $0.919. This is a reduction of $0.23 per therm from the last posted rate. The new rate for customers who qualify for the low-income senior program is $0.735. This is a 20% discount from the new variable rate. The discount rate for low-income seniors will be in effect through the winter months.

The GNG special discount for low-income seniors is in addition to the lower base charge already provided to those customers by Atlanta Gas Light (AGL). Currently, GNG has approximately 15,000 customers benefiting from the low-income senior citizen base rate.

Announcing the rate reductions, Georgia Natural Gas President Stephen Gunther stated, "We have made a commitment to our customers to keep our prices as competitive as possible. With the recent decline in wholesale gas prices, we have been able to accomplish this significant reduction in our own prices."
