UNION, N.J.
Elizabethtown Gas is warning utility customers about scam artists targeting New Jersey residents. Two recent incidents involving Elizabethtown Gas customers suggest individuals may try to pose as a gas company employee to gain personal and financial information over the telephone or attempt to schedule appointments to enter a customer's home. Residents are warned not to give out sensitive information to persons who may contact them by phone claiming to represent the company (Elizabethtown Gas does ask for verification information when customers call the company) or allow anyone into their home unless they have a valid identification badge. "Identity theft is one of the fastest-growing crimes in America," said Don Carter, vice president and general manager, Elizabethtown Gas. "We urge consumers to be vigilant and to call our Customer Care Center if they have any questions or suspect they have been contacted by a scam artist." Elizabethtown Gas customers can contact the company's Customer Care Center at 1-800-242-5830 or by email at More information about how consumers can protect themselves from fraud can be found on the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General Web site: http://www.njconsumeraffairs.gov/idtheft.htm.
