ELIZABETH, N.J.
As the application deadline for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) fast approaches, Elizabethtown Gas reminds consumers that energy assistance is still available to help them with home heating costs. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services also approved the release of emergency contingency funding. "We want to spread the word and remind our low- and fixed-income consumers that they can get help with their energy payments by taking advantage of assistance funds that are still available," said Don Carter, vice president and general manager of Elizabethtown Gas. LIHEAP is a federally funded program that helps families and individuals with their energy bills. New Jersey's program is administered by the Department of Community Affairs. Assistance is provided for heating assistance, medically necessary cooling assistance and emergency crisis assistance. LIHEAP began taking applications on Nov. 1, 2007 and will continue accepting them through April 15, 2008. To apply, customers should contact their local county LIHEAP office. Emergency contingency funds are available for customers who are already receiving LIHEAP and are in jeopardy of being shut off for non-payment. The emergency funding application deadline is April 30, 2008. Customers who are not currently receiving assistance can apply for LIHEAP and emergency funding concurrently. If a customer's account is past due, Elizabethtown Gas encourages them to contact the company as soon as possible to discuss payment options to avoid disruption in their service. This will allow the customer to pay off their balance over an extended period of time, while staying current with any new bills. Elizabethtown Gas also encourages customers to dial 2-1-1 for a referral to other energy assistance programs. "Customers often avoid calling. However, the earlier they contact us, the more options there are available to work out a payment plan," adds Carter. Customers can call 1-800-242-5830 for more information about the Deferred Payment Arrangement.
