Gulf Power wraps up power restoration for nearly 59,000 customers

Gulf Power Company crews have restored power to 59,000 customers in just three days following the devastating floods that hit Northwest Florida.

The majority of the customers without power were located in Escambia and Santa Rosa County, who were hit hardest by the storm that hovered over Northwest Florida.

“We’ve had a busy year so far with several storms, including the ice storm that hit our area pretty hard,” said Jeff Rogers, Gulf Power Communications manager. “One thing's for certain, our crews will be well prepared for what could come our way during hurricane season.”

Gulf Power’s customers are experiencing fewer power outages than any other time in recent history. In fact, investments in the power grid have made a significant difference, improving reliability for the utility’s 436,000 customers by more than 35 percent since 2010.

More than 300 linemen and 100 support personnel from other utilities arrived to help Gulf Power with restoration efforts. This includes crews from Mississippi Power, Alabama Power, Georgia Power, and Oncor, a utility located in Texas that Gulf Power assisted in December for an ice storm.

Most of the out-of-state crews are headed back home now that power has been restored to the majority of Gulf Power customers.

“We’re thankful for the help from our sister utilities as well as local authorities in the area who have helped us navigate flooded and blocked roads so that we could restore power,” said Rogers. “We also want to make sure our customers know how appreciative we are of their patience and support throughout this event.”

For those who are still without power, Gulf Power’s Online Outage map, outagemap.gulfpower.com, lets you track power restoration efforts. You can access this map through the company’s website or its new Outage App on your smartphone. If your home is flooded above or at the level of electrical outlets, Gulf Power will not be able to restore power to your home until it has been inspected by the city or county.
