Top five reasons to recycle your refrigerator

Is your refrigerator running? Gulf Power customers who answer yes should consider recycling their secondary or inefficient refrigerators or freezers through Gulf Power’s appliance recycling program.

Why recycle? Here are the top five reasons to participate:

1.    It’s easy. The only lifting required is lifting your finger to call 1-855-559-2523, or visit http://www.gulfpower.com/residential/earthcents/appliance-recycling.cshtml to schedule a home pickup.

2.    It’s free. Recycling your fridge through the program won’t cost you a cent. Gulf Power will pick up your old unit from your home and haul it away for free.

3.    It pays. All program participants receive a $35 incentive check. Use your $35 incentive to take the family to the movies.

4.    It saves. Because older units were not built to current energy efficiency standards, retiring and recycling an inefficient refrigerator or freezer can save you up to $150 annually on reduced household energy costs.

5.    It’s green. By ensuring your old unit is safely and responsibly recycled, you save it from rusting away in a landfill and instead repurpose materials back into the manufacturing stream.

Customers will receive a $35 incentive check in the mail in about four to six weeks. There is a limit of two units for every household. Appliances must be in working order with an inside measurement between 10 and 30 cubic feet, standard size for most units.

“Keeping old, secondary refrigerators in operation can make energy costs higher than necessary,” said Natalie Smith, Gulf Power spokesperson. “Old refrigerators can use up to three times more energy than newer appliances built to modern efficiency standards.”

Units picked up through the program are transported to an appliance recycling facility operated by JACO Environmental. JACO safely removes harmful materials from the old energy-guzzlers, reclaiming 95 percent of the materials for reuse in manufacturing new products. Even foam insulation is safely incinerated to generate electricity.
