180,000-pound CA05 structural module placed at Vogtle Unit 3

ATLANTA, Oct. 21, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Georgia Power announced today the completion of another major milestone in the construction of Plant Vogtle units 3 and 4 near Waynesboro, Ga. On Monday, the project team successfully placed the 180,000-pound CA05 module into the Unit 3 nuclear island. The CA05 structural module is housed within the Unit 3 containment building and is comprised of reinforced steel plates that will be filled with concrete to provide structural support for the containment building. In addition to providing structural support, the protective walls of CA05 will also separate various rooms in containment.

The Vogtle 3 and 4 project continues to progress well, marking milestones and meeting challenges associated with building the first new nuclear units in 30 years. This year has been busy at the site with other major milestones achieved including the placement of the 920,000-pound CR10 module (or cradle) into the Unit 4 nuclear island in February, placement of the 2.2 million-pound CA20 module for Unit 3 in March, and the successful setting of the 1.8 million-pound containment vessel bottom head (CVBH) in Unit 4 in May.

Most recently, the project team placed the 1.9 million-pound lower ring on top of the Unit 3 CVBH. Measuring more than 50 feet tall, the lower ring was one of the largest lifts of the project.

The expansion at Plant Vogtle is part of Georgia Power's long-term, strategic vision for providing safe, clean, reliable and affordable energy for Georgians over the next 60 years. It is the largest job-producing project in the state, employing more than 5,000 workers at the site currently and expected to create 800 nuclear careers when the plant enters service.

Southern Nuclear, a subsidiary of Southern Company, is overseeing construction and will operate the two new 1,100-megawatt AP1000 units for Georgia Power and co-owners Oglethorpe Power Corporation, the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia and Dalton Utilities. Georgia Power owns 45.7 percent of the new units.
