ATLANTA – Jan 29, 2015 – As millions of people across the country observed the 2015 MLK Day of Service this January 19, Georgia Power employees honored Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of service by trading in their suits, uniforms and hard hats for coveralls, tool belts and paint brushes. Regardless of where they work in the company, employees rolled up their sleeves in memory of Dr. King and to celebrate the company’s pledge to be “a citizen wherever we serve.”

This year, more than 1,100 employees worked to make cities and towns throughout Georgia better places to live and work by participating in 54 separate service projects. Projects ranged from creating care packages for military families at Moody Air Force Base in Valdosta; to constructing a pathway at the Southeastern Firefighters Burn Foundation in Augusta; to sorting food at the Statesboro Food Bank; to landscaping and gardening at Southview Cemetery in Atlanta.

Since the company began tracking MLK Day of Service efforts in 2005, it estimates:

  • 10,600 Georgia Power total employee volunteers.
  • 470 individual service projects.
  • 42,000 total service hours across the state.
  • $900,000+ in hourly service value.

Although the MLK Day of Service is the company’s largest single day of volunteering, Georgia Power employees place a focus on community service year round including companywide engagement in Earth Day and the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life program. In addition, current employees and retirees (known as Georgia Power Ambassadors), identify and support various local causes and organizations which directly benefit their neighborhoods and communities.
