Volunteers set to clean Lay Lake April 4

What:  The 13th annual Renew Our Rivers Lay Lake cleanup at the Gaston Steam Plant is Saturday, April 4. Volunteers should report at 7 a.m. to Richey’s Resort at the steam plant on Highway 25. Local coordinators will have signs to direct traffic. Volunteers should wear long pants, boots and a long-sleeved shirt. Minors must have a chaperone to participate. Breakfast and lunch will be provided for the volunteers, along with snacks and drinks. The cleanup will finish at noon.

This Renew Our Rivers cleanup is coordinated by Alabama Power.

Overview:  Volunteers for Renew Our Rivers, one of the Southeast’s largest river cleanup campaigns, have collected nearly 14 million pounds of trash and debris since the program’s inception in 2000. This year, 31 cleanups are planned through November on the Alabama, Black Warrior, Cahaba, Chattahoochee, Coosa, Mobile and Tallapoosa rivers.

Directions:  Take Interstate 65 to exit 228 to Highway 25 toward Wilsonville. Stay straight for 20 miles until you reach the Gaston Steam Plant. Officers at the security gate will direct volunteers to Richey’s Resort on the plant site.
