Volunteers set to clean Smith Lake May 23
What: The annual Renew Our Rivers Smith Lake cleanup is Saturday, May 23. Volunteers should report at 8:30 a.m. at Smith Lake Dam parking lot. Volunteers should wear comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes. Minors must have a chaperone to participate. The cleanup will finish at noon. This Renew Our Rivers cleanup is coordinated by Alabama Power and Smith Lake Civic Association. Overview: Volunteers for Renew Our Rivers, one of the Southeast’s largest river cleanup campaigns, have collected nearly 14 million pounds of trash and debris since the program’s inception in 2000. This year, 31 cleanups are planned through November on the Alabama, Black Warrior, Cahaba, Chattahoochee, Coosa, Mobile and Tallapoosa rivers. Turn left on Highway 91 and continue for 14.6 miles, and then turn left on Highway 69 South. Follow Highway 69 for 4.4 miles and then turn right onto Smith Lake Dam Road/County Highway 43.
