Garlington named Southern Nuclear vice president

John Garlington , SCGEM General Manager, Nuclear has been named vice president, Southern Nuclear, by the Southern Nuclear Board of Directors. In addition to his current duties, his new duties will include leading the transition team to integrate SCGEM and SNC nuclear engineering functions and managing the newly established team.

Garlington began his Southern Company career in 1969 as a co-op student with Gulf Power Company. He joined Alabama Power Company in 1971 as a Jr. Engineer at Barry Steam Plant. In 1973, he became a generating engineer at Farley Nuclear Plant and participated in the initial license training program at Zion, Illinois. He held various positions at Plant Farley in Operations, Engineering, Quality Assurance and Project Management until 1985 when he was named Manager of Nuclear Engineering and Licensing at Corporate Headquarters in Birmingham.

He was named General Manager of Nuclear Support in 1988, first at Alabama Power and later at Southern Nuclear when that company was formed in 1990. In 1992, he was named assistant to Allen Franklin, President and Chief Executive Officer of Southern Company Services. He returned to Southern Nuclear in 1993. In 1997, he was assigned Steam Generator Replacement Project Manager, Farley Project, Southern Nuclear, through its completion in 2001 at which time he joined SCS Engineering & Construction Services as General Manger-Nuclear.

A native of Birmingham, Garlington graduated from Auburn University with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. He held a Nuclear Regulatory Commission senior reactor operator’s license at Plant Farley for fifteen years.
