Fifty-two Alabama high schools advance today to the voting round of the Alabama Power Foundation’s Power To Play grant competition. Power To Play focuses on helping expand student access to high school athletic programs.

Beginning today, the 52 schools will be showcased on the Power To Play website, www.powertoplay.org. A link can also be found on the Alabama Power Foundation’s website, www.powerofgood.com. Visitors to the Power To Play site can read short descriptions of how each school hopes to use Power To Play funds, and then vote for their favorite applicants.

Supporters can vote once per day now through Nov. 15. Voters must be at least 13 years old. Grant recipients will be announced Nov. 23.

Grants will be distributed across Alabama Power’s six territorial divisions, so applicants only compete with schools in their geographical area. Schools must obtain a minimum of 250 votes to be eligible for a grant.

“It is exciting to see a community rally around a good cause,” said John Hudson, president of the Alabama Power Foundation. “Power To Play gives communities all across the state the opportunity to do just that, to get out and show their support for something that is important to their kids. That’s a powerful thing.”

Since the Alabama Power Foundation’s creation in 1989 with funds donated by shareholders, it has provided support to Alabama communities, educational institutions and nonprofits with non-ratepayer money through more than 20,000 grants and scholarships.
