About East Lake Community Foundation
The East Lake Community Foundation was established in 1995 to help transform one of the nations most violent public housing projects into an award-winning mixed-income community. Drawing on the expertise and resources of public and private partners, the Foundation developed a new community which includes The Villages of East Lake, an apartment complex with half market-rate and half subsidized units; Charles R. Drew Charter School, the city of Atlantas first public charter school; the East Lake Family YMCA; Sheltering Arms Early Learning Center; and the Charlie Yates Golf Course, a public, 18-hole golf course that is home to The First Tee of East Lake, a year-round golf and mentoring program for East Lake youth. The Foundations mission is to help the families of The Villages of East Lake and the children of Drew Charter School break the cycle of poverty and build a better future for themselves through education, excellent affordable housing, job readiness and connections with the broader community. The East Lake model is working. Crime rates are way down, school test scores and property values are up and most adults in the East Lake community are now working.
