The drought affecting all of Alabama continues to reduce flows in rivers and streams that feed Alabama Power’s lakes. The conditions have resulted in levels at Alabama Power reservoirs below typical elevations for this time of year.

Weather experts forecast that drought conditions are likely to continue or even intensify. The National Weather Service, in its Winter Outlook for 2016-2017, predicts drier, warmer conditions through the winter, which would continue to affect lake levels.

Water levels continue to fall at Weiss, Neely Henry and Logan Martin lakes on the Coosa River, Harris and Martin lakes on the Tallapoosa River, and Smith Lake on the Black Warrior River. By early to mid-November, all of these lakes are expected to be at or near their normal winter levels. Without rain, lake levels will continue to fall after winter levels are reached.

Alabama Power has further reduced water releases from its hydroelectric dams, consistent with its federal licenses. The company also has suspended all recreational releases from Jordan Dam on the Coosa River. The company is working with government agencies, municipalities, businesses and community groups to communicate about the ongoing efforts to conserve water.

Alabama Power will continue to closely monitor conditions on the lakes and carefully manage the limited water resources. It is important for individuals with boats and other water-related equipment and facilities to stay alert to changing conditions on Alabama Power reservoirs and be prepared to take the necessary steps to protect their property.
