Volunteers set to clean Smith Lake in Cullman County Sept. 15
What: The annual Renew Our Rivers Smith Lake cleanup is Friday, Sept. 15. Volunteers should report at 8:30 a.m. to the Smith Lake Cullman County Park. Because of limited seating on the boats, contact volunteer coordinator Jim Murphy one week prior to the cleanup. Volunteers should wear long pants, boots and a long-sleeved shirt. Minors must have a chaperone or permission slip to participate. Lunch will be provided for the volunteers at noon. The cleanup will finish at approximately 3:30 p.m., if weather permits. This Renew Our Rivers cleanup is coordinated by the Smith Lake Environmental Preservation Committee and Alabama Power. Overview: Volunteers for Renew Our Rivers, one of the Southeast’s largest river cleanup campaigns, have collected more than 14 million pounds of trash and debris since the program’s inception in 2000. This year, 32 cleanups are planned through November on the Alabama, Black Warrior, Cahaba, Chattahoochee, Coosa, Mobile and Tallapoosa rivers.
