Mark Crosswhite, Alabama Power chairman, president and CEO, today announced the board of directors has elected Alexia Borden as senior vice president and general counsel.  

Borden most recently served as the company’s vice president with responsibility for Governmental Affairs. She succeeds Matt Bowden, who passed away Oct. 11.

The Alabama Power board of directors also elected Houston Smith vice president with responsibility for Governmental Affairs. Smith most recently served as the company’s director of Corporate Affairs.

“Alexia and Houston bring tremendous experience and knowledge of the company to their new roles,” Crosswhite said. “They will continue to be strong contributors to Alabama Power’s leadership team as we strive every day to serve the needs of our customers.”  

Borden and Smith will assume their new responsibilities effective immediately. 

Borden joined Alabama Power in 2016. Her duties included responsibility for all aspects of the company's governmental affairs at the state level. She also served as the company’s principal liaison with state elected officials, cabinet members and agency representatives.

Before joining the company, Borden practiced law for over a decade in Birmingham and Montgomery, representing Alabama Power and other clients in environmental and natural resources matters and governmental relations.

Borden holds a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. She received her Juris Doctor from the University of Alabama School of Law.

Borden serves on several civic and charitable boards, including the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and the Baptist Health Foundation.

Smith joined Alabama Power in 2012 as director of Public Relations. In 2016, he was named director of Corporate Affairs with responsibility over federal affairs, corporate relations and other public policy issues.

Prior to joining the company, Smith practiced law in Birmingham, principally in litigation matters. He has a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and graduated cum laude from the University of Alabama School of Law.

Smith serves on the board of directors for Alabama Possible, the Hispanic Interest Coalition of Alabama and the Bell Center. He’s also on the board of directors of the Farrah Law Society Foundation of the University of Alabama among other civic and community activities.
