Alabama Power Foundation awards Power to Play grants
Grants to support high school arts and athletics programs The Alabama Power Foundation has awarded 35 Power to Play grants to support arts and athletics programs at high schools across Alabama. This is Power to Play’s fourth year helping Alabama high school extracurricular programs. The foundation will award grants of $2,500 each to schools throughout the state. Twenty-two of those grants will go to athletics programs and 13 will go to arts programs. Studies show that students who participate in athletics perform better in the classroom and are more likely to graduate from high school, among other benefits. Involvement in arts and music courses has been linked to higher standardized test scores, improved graduation and attendance rates and fewer disciplinary problems. “We are excited to support students across the state through our Power to Play program,” said Myla Calhoun, president of the Alabama Power Foundation. “This year’s grantees represent a wide variety of programs – from band to competitive cheerleading, wrestling to the fine arts. We are proud to assist Alabama students in pursuing their athletic and artistic passions.” All recipients of the Power to Play grants are public high schools with 50 percent or more of their students eligible for free or reduced-price lunches. Since 2014, Power to Play has awarded more than 130 grants to support arts and athletics programs at high schools across Alabama. The 2017 arts grant recipients are:
