Volunteers set to clean Cahaba River April 7
What: The annual Renew Our Rivers Cahaba River cleanup is Saturday, April 7. Volunteers should report at 8 a.m. to the Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge near West Blocton. Minors must have a chaperone to participate. Volunteers should wear long pants and sturdy shoes. The cleanup will end at noon followed by lunch for the volunteers. This Renew Our Rivers cleanup is coordinated by Cahaba Riverkeeper, Friends of the Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge and Alabama Power. Overview: Volunteers for Renew Our Rivers, one of the Southeast’s largest river cleanup campaigns, have collected more than 15 million pounds of trash and debris since the program’s inception in 2000. This year, 30 cleanups are planned through November on the Alabama, Black Warrior, Cahaba, Chattahoochee, Coosa, Mobile and Tallapoosa rivers. After 5 miles, turn left to stay on Alabama 5. Continue for 7 miles and then turn left onto Bibb County 24. Travel for 5 miles and then look for River Trace and Cahaba Wildlife Refuge signs on the right. If you cross the Cahaba River, you have gone too far.
