Cities, schools, nonprofits can apply for tree-planting grants

The Alabama Power Foundation will accept applications for the 2018 Good Roots grant program between April 23 and June 15.

In partnership with the Alabama Urban Forestry Association and the Alabama Forestry Commission, the foundation awards up to $1,000 per Good Roots grant to help cities, towns, schools and nonprofit organizations plant trees. Good Roots grants help keep communities vibrant by supporting environmental projects.

In 2017, the foundation awarded 41 Good Roots grants totaling more than $40,000. To date, the foundation has awarded more than $650,000 to hundreds of cities, towns, schools and nonprofits, enabling them to plant trees at schools, churches, parks and other community locations.

“Trees don’t just make our communities beautiful, they also improve our health and well-being,” said Myla Calhoun, president of the Alabama Power Foundation. “When a community has a functional green space, it has a place for people to exercise and congregate. Green spaces contribute to a town’s sense of community, and we are proud to support those efforts.”

Nonprofit organizations, schools, cities, towns and communities of any size are welcome to apply online for a Good Roots grant.

Since its creation in 1989 with funds donated by shareholders, the Alabama Power Foundation has supported Alabama communities, educational institutions and nonprofits with nonratepayer dollars through more than 20,000 grant and scholarship awards.
