ATLANTA – Southern Company has named Susan Story as the company’s executive vice president of engineering and generation services.

Story, 40, will have management responsibility for the arm of Southern Company that provides engineering, procurement and construction services to the existing generating plant fleet as well as for new and planned generation.

“The success of engineering and generation services is critical as we continue to support our existing power plants and undertake an aggressive construction program to help meet our goal of adding 15,000 megawatts of generating capacity in the Southeastern U.S. by 2010,” said Southern Company Chairman and Chief Executive Officer A.W. “Bill” Dahlberg. “Susan’s experience, leadership ability and career accomplishments make her the right person to move this organization forward in this exciting and challenging era of the company.”

Story most recently was Southern Company’s vice president of procurement and materials. In addition to being responsible for the procurement and materials organization, she had responsibility for accounting, business planning, public relations and communications activities for Southern Company Generation. She also worked on human resources issues impacting Southern Company Generation and managed special projects within the organization.

Story joined Southern Company in 1982 at its Alabama Power subsidiary where she held positions in nuclear generation, planning and productivity and district operations. In 1990, she was named director of human resources and organizational effectiveness at Southern Company Services. Story returned to Alabama Power in 1993 as vice president of corporate real estate, and she assumed additional responsibility for Alabama Power’s corporate services in 1997. She had been in her most recent position since March of last year.

Story, a native of Albertville, Ala., earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering from Auburn University and an MBA from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and has done post-graduate work in finance at the University of Alabama. She also is a graduate of The Oxford Advanced Management Program at Templeton College, Oxford, England, and a 1992 graduate of the Advanced Management Program at Duke University. She completed the International Women’s Foundation Leadership Fellows Program at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government and Cambridge University in England.

Story was chosen as one of 12 women worldwide to participate in the 1999-2000 Foundation Leadership Fellows Program sponsored by the International Women’s Forum. She also is involved in numerous charitable, civic and professional boards and activities.
