Southern Electric International plans to open two offices in the Northeast, one in Boston and one in Concord, N.H., Southern Electric President Tom Boren announced today. Harold T. Judd will oversee both offices, which open May 1.

Southern Electric, a unit of The Southern Company, develops, builds, owns and operates power production and delivery facilities and provides a broad range of technical services to utilities and industrial companies in the U.S. and international markets. Southern Electric also operates Southern Energy Marketing, a subsidiary that markets electricity outside The Southern Company’s traditional Southeast service area.

The opening of these offices will enable Southern to participate more effectively in the increasingly competitive Northeast energy markets.

The Southern Company (NYSE:SO) is also the parent firm of five electric utilities: Alabama Power, Georgia Power, Gulf Power, Mississippi Power and Savannah Electric. Other subsidiaries include Southern Nuclear, Southern Company Services and Southern Development and Investment Group. Together, these companies make up one of the largest electric utility groups in the United States. The Southern Company’s common stock is one of the 20 most widely held corporate stocks in America.

Judd, an attorney, most recently had a private practice representing utilities. He previously worked as senior assistant attorney general for New Hampshire, where he negotiated reorganization plans for utilities.

From 1985 to 1987 he worked as Economic Development Counsel to the Congress of the Federated States of Micronesia. From 1979 until 1985 he worked for the federal government, first in the White House Office of Consumer Affairs and later as a deputy solicitor at the U.S. Department of Energy. He also worked for the state of New Hampshire representing residential customers in utility matters from 1977 to 1979.
