Crane contacts power line disrupting power to Tybee Island; Repairs to continue well into the night

At 1:01 p.m. Friday, a crane on a barge contacted and brought down the main power line serving Tybee Island. The damage to the 46,000 volt line has disrupted power to all 3,900 customers east of the Lazaretto Creek Bridge. The owner of the crane has not yet been determined, but it was not involved with Savannah Electric.

Crews are currently on the scene and are working to repair the line. Because of the location and nature of the repairs, the outage is expected to persist until the early morning hours.

Customers with urgent health needs should contact 911 for emergency assistance. Others may want to make other arrangements for the evening if the extended outage presents health or comfort challenges.

Advice for customers during the outage:

• Battery-powered lanterns and flashlights should be used in lieu of candles this evening.

• Drivers should use extra caution as traffic signals and street lighting will be out in the affected area.

• Well-stocked and insulated freezers should remain cold for the expected duration of this outage if kept closed.

• Customers should turn off any stoves, ovens or other devices that were on or could come on automatically in case power is restored after customers have left home or gone to bed.

• If a customer remains without power after other lights on the Island have been restored, they should call the Hotline at 1-800-390-2834.
