PRNewswire
NYSE: SO

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Jan. 8, 2009 - Weiss Lake on the Coosa River is expected to crest slightly lower than first projected following this week’s heavy rains in Alabama and Georgia, while Logan Martin Lake on the Coosa is expected to crest higher than first projected.

Lake Logan Martin is expected to crest late today or early Friday at about 470 feet, up from the original projection of 467 feet. That would put the lake some five feet above the typical summer pool level of 465 feet.

Weiss Lake is now predicted to crest today at about 565 feet, down from the original projection of 566 feet. That would put Weiss about one foot above the normal summer level of 564 feet.

In the case of both lakes, the predicted crests are within the reservoirs’ flood easements.

Spillway gates are operating at most of the company’s Coosa River dams as part of the company’s efforts to manage the rising waters.

Alabama Power will continue to closely monitor conditions on the lakes and manage resources carefully. Individuals with boats and other water-related equipment and facilities should always be alert to changing conditions on Alabama Power reservoirs and be prepared to take the necessary steps to protect their property.
