Volunteers roll up sleeves for cleanup on Bankhead Reservoir, part of Renew Our Rivers campaign, May 30
What: The 6th annual Bankhead Reservoir cleanup will be Saturday, May 30. Volunteers with or without boats will meet at the Buddy Vines Camp at 8 a.m. to remove trash, tires and discarded items from the lake. The cleanup will end at noon, followed by a picnic lunch. This Renew Our Rivers cleanup is coordinated by the Black Warrior Clean Water Partnership, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Alabama Power employees. In 2008, 5.09 tons of trash and debris were removed by 89 volunteers. Overview: Renew Our Rivers, the Southeast’s largest river cleanup campaign, has collected more than 10 million pounds of trash and debris from Alabama and Southeast rivers since its 2000 inception. There are 23 cleanups planned through Oct. 24. Cleanups are on the Cahaba, Coosa, Tallapoosa, Black Warrior and Mobile rivers in Alabama.
