ATLANTA - Aug. 7, 2007 - For the second consecutive day, Southern Company set a new system peak demand record for electricity use. On Tuesday, Aug. 7, preliminary peak demand for electricity averaged approximately 39,215 megawatts (MW) between 3 and 4 p.m. Eastern Time.

Tuesday’s record is 179 MW higher than the previous peak record of 39,036 MW, which was set one day earlier on Monday, Aug. 6. Monday’s record was 980 MW higher than the previous peak record set on Aug. 10, 2006.

Compared to August of 2006, peak energy demand has grown by more than 1,000 MW, equivalent to the amount of power required to serve approximately 250,000 homes. The peak demand record represents the average peak demand for electricity over a one-hour period and reflects the retail and wholesale obligations of Southern Company.

With high temperatures continuing across the Southeast, the potential exists for additional demand records to be set this summer.
