What:  The third annual Upper Tallapoosa River cleanup is Saturday, Aug. 8. Volunteers should meet at noon Saturday at Tallapoosa River Outfitters to remove trash from the river. Volunteers with boats are encouraged. The cleanup will end in the early evening with a cookout.

This Renew Our Rivers cleanup is coordinated by Tallapoosa River Outfitters, Heflin Mayor Anna Berry, WM Grocery, Cheatwood Hardwood, Metro Bank, Cleburne County Sheriff's Department, East Alabama Portables and Alabama Power. In 2008, about 60 volunteers removed more than 5,000 pounds of trash and debris from the Tallapoosa River.

Overview:  Volunteers for Renew Our Rivers, the Southeast’s largest river cleanup campaign, have collected more than 10 million pounds of trash and debris from Alabama and Southeastern rivers since the program’s 2000 inception. There are 23 cleanups planned through Oct. 24 on the Cahaba, Coosa, Tallapoosa, Black Warrior and Mobile rivers.

Directions: Take I-20 to Exit 205. Turn right off the exit headed east on Highway 46. Go 3 miles. Cross the Perry Hand Bridge. Tallapoosa River Outfitters is located immediately on the left.
