Volunteers clean Holt Lake Aug. 15 as part of Renew Our Rivers campaign
What: The fifth annual Holt Lake cleanup is Saturday, Aug.15. Volunteers with boats are encouraged to participate. All volunteers will meet at 8 a.m. at Rocky Branch Park in Peterson to remove trash from the lake. The cleanup will end at noon. Lunch will be served. This Renew Our Rivers cleanup is coordinated by Black Warrior Clean Water Partnership, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Alabama Power. In 2008, 118 volunteers removed more than 4,900 pounds of trash and debris from Holt Lake. Overview: Volunteers for Renew Our Rivers, the Southeast’s largest river cleanup campaign, have collected more than 10 million pounds of trash and debris from Alabama and Southeastern rivers since the program’s 2000 inception. There are 23 cleanups planned through Oct. 24 on the Cahaba, Coosa, Tallapoosa, Black Warrior and Mobile rivers. Directions: From Tuscaloosa follow Highway 216 for 7.4 miles. Turn left onto Rocky Branch Road. Travel 3 miles to Rocky Branch Park.
