BIRMINGHAM – More than 100 Jefferson and Shelby county students will get

on-site training from Alabama Power engineers at company headquarters March 25 for “E-Day,” or Engineering Day.

Employees who work with the program say they want to inspire students interested in pursuing an engineering career. Alabama Power employee Grant Gilmer said it provides a great opportunity to educate students about working with the company. “This year will be more interactive, with students receiving hands-on training from every one of our engineering disciplines – generation, transmission, distribution and substations,” he said.

The third annual E-Day program is geared to high school seniors who have expressed an interest and shown the ability to become an engineer. Participants were selected by their teachers and counselors. This year, students and faculty from 16 Birmingham area high schools are participating.

 “We want to encourage their future as an engineer,” said Gilmer. “The program will also cover salary, benefits and steps to take after graduating high school to help have a successful career.”

This event is part of the Learning Engineering Applications and Principles (LEAP) program, which includes class presentations and mentoring partnerships, in addition to E-Day.
