What:  The 7th annual Bankhead Lake cleanup is Saturday, June 5. Volunteers will meet at the Warrior River Elks Lodge in Adger at 8 a.m. to remove trash, tires and discarded items from the lake. The cleanup will end at noon, followed by a picnic lunch.

This Renew Our Rivers cleanup is coordinated by the Black Warrior River Clean Water Partnership, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Alabama Power. In 2009, more than 7 tons of trash were removed by 132 volunteers during the Bankhead cleanup.

Overview:  Volunteers for Renew Our Rivers, one of the Southeast’s largest river
cleanups, have collected more than 10 million pounds of trash and debris from Alabama and Southeast rivers since its inception in 2000. Twenty-five cleanups are planned through October. Cleanups are held each year on the Cahaba, Coosa, Tallapoosa, Black Warrior, Mobile and Alabama rivers.

Directions: From Birmingham – Take I-20/59 toward Tuscaloosa.  Take Exit 112 toward 18th Street-Hueytown.  Take a slight right onto 19th Street North.  Travel one mile and turn left onto 26th Avenue North.  After a half-mile take a right onto 15th Street.  Travel seven miles and turn left onto Warrior River Road/County Road 46.  Warrior River Road becomes Lock 17 Road.  Travel 2.5 miles and turn right onto Camp Oliver Road.  Travel 8.6 miles and turn left onto Hurd Shoals Road.  108 Hurd Shoals Road will be on the left.
