What:  The 11th annual Lay Lake cleanup is Saturday, June 12.  Volunteers will meet at Richey’s Resort located at E.C. Gaston Steam Plant at 7 a.m. to remove trash, tires and discarded items from the lake.  Boats will be supplied and volunteers can bring their own boats. Breakfast, drinks and a picnic lunch will be provided.  The cleanup will end at noon.

This Renew Our Rivers cleanup is coordinated by the Lay Lake Homeowners and Boat Owners Association, Alabama Power and Boy and Girl Scouts of America. In 2009, more than 2.4 tons of trash were removed by 154 volunteers during the Lay Lake cleanup.

Overview:  Volunteers for Renew Our Rivers, one of the Southeast’s largest river
cleanups, have collected more than 10 million pounds of trash and debris from Alabama and Southeastern rivers since the project’s inception in 2000. Twenty-five cleanups are planned through October. Cleanups are held each year on the Cahaba, Coosa, Tallapoosa, Black Warrior, Mobile and Alabama rivers.

Directions: From Birmingham – Take Highway 280 East approximately 29 miles.  Turn right on Highway 25.  Travel 10 miles to the E.C. Gaston Steam Plant entrance on the left.  Travel past the security gate and the officers will direct you to Richey’s Resort on the plant site.
