Alabama Power Service Organization partners with ADECA, AWA to weatherize homes

The Alabama Power Service Organization (APSO) is teaming with the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) and the Alabama Weatherization Association (AWA) to improve the energy efficiency of four family homes in conjunction with National Weatherization Day Oct. 30. Volunteers will work on these homes Friday, Oct. 29.

This is the third year that APSO has joined with partners to weatherize homes. This year’s weatherization projects are in Birmingham, Montgomery, Parrish and Tuscaloosa. The homes will receive upgrades, including insulation; repairs to ducts and siding; and fresh caulking around windows. The hot water heaters will be wrapped with insulation, and conventional light bulbs will be replaced with compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs).

AWA and its agencies selected the homes for energy-efficiency and weatherization improvements. Volunteers from APSO and community agencies will do minor repairs.

APSO members volunteer their time and resources to serve communities across Alabama. APSO focuses on projects that help improve education, the environment and quality of life for Alabama families.

“These simple home improvements can translate into big savings in the long run for our customers,” said Carla Roberson, Alabama Power’s Education and Volunteer Services manager. “Each year, our APSO volunteers look forward to partnering with AWA and ADECA on these community projects.”

“This is just one way we can help empower people in what has been a tough economy,” said Kris Rowe of AWA. “A special thanks to our volunteers who continue to support these needed community efforts.”

Administered by ADECA, the Alabama Weatherization Assistance Program helps individuals cut their utility bills by making homes more energy efficient. The program gives priority to the elderly, those with disabilities and low-income residents with small children.
