Spillway gates continue operating at Coosa/Tallapoosa river dams; Weiss, Logan Martin and Smith to rise well above summer pool levels

The substantial rainfall received overnight into today has Alabama Power operating spillway gates at its Henry, Logan Martin, Lay, Mitchell and Jordan dams on the Coosa River to help manage flows and rising lake levels. Weiss spillway gates are expected to operate late tonight or early Thursday. Spill operations are also taking place at Yates and Thurlow dams on the Tallapoosa River. Spill operations are expected to last for several days as Alabama Power releases flows from the rainfall.

On Friday, March 11, Weiss Lake on the Coosa River is expected to crest near elevation 567 feet, which is about 3 feet above its normal summer pool elevation. Logan Martin Lake on Friday is expected to crest near elevation 471 feet, or about 6 feet above its normal summer pool elevation. On the Warrior River, Saturday, March 12, Smith Lake is expected to crest near elevation 519 feet, some 9 feet above its normal summer pool elevation.

Alabama Power will continue to closely monitor conditions on the lakes and manage resources carefully. Individuals with boats and other water-related equipment and facilities should always be alert to changing conditions on Alabama Power reservoirs and be prepared to take the necessary steps to protect their property.
