Volunteers clean Weiss Lake March 21-26, part of Renew Our Rivers campaign

What:  The 12th Annual Weiss Lake cleanup is March 21-26, 2011.

This Renew Our Rivers cleanup is sponsored by Weiss Lake Improvement Association. In 2010, 1,925 volunteers removed 14,980 pounds of trash from Weiss Lake and its watershed.

Overview:  Volunteers for Renew Our Rivers, one of the Southeast’s largest river cleanups, have collected more than 11 million pounds of trash and debris since its inception in 2000. More than 30 cleanups are held each year from February through October on the Alabama, Black Warrior, Cahaba, Coosa, Mobile, Chattahoochee and Tallapoosa rivers.

Directions: The public is instructed to collect trash anywhere along Weiss Lake's 450 miles of shoreline. The general public can get trash bags, T-shirts and gloves at the Cherokee County Chamber office. Dumpsters will be at Leesburg Landing, the Cedar Bluff Causeway on Highway 9 in Centre and at John’s Grocery at the intersection of County Road 31 and County Road 22.
