BIRMINGHAM – Southern Nuclear Operating Company announced today that its Board of Directors elected Joseph (Buzz) Miller as senior vice president of Nuclear Development. This role, which is new at Southern Nuclear, will oversee the development of Southern Company’s nuclear generation expansion efforts. Miller will report to Southern Nuclear President and CEO Barnie Beasley. Miller also will serve as president of Southern Nuclear Development, LLC, a Southern Nuclear subsidiary created to house Southern Company’s unregulated nuclear generation ventures.

“Buzz brings a wealth of talent and experience to this job,” said Beasley. “Not only does he have a deep understanding of nuclear industry issues, but he also has a proven track record in coordinating projects effectively with multiple constituencies.”

In his new role, Miller will coordinate new nuclear plant development activities, including working with Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to explore the economic viability of partnering on potential new nuclear generation at TVA’s Bellefonte site in north Alabama, and working with Georgia Power and other co-owners of the Alvin W. Vogtle Electric Generating Plant to pursue potential new nuclear units at the Plant Vogtle site.

Southern Nuclear and Georgia Power recently announced the companies will pursue the Westinghouse AP1000 reactor design for potential new units at Plant Vogtle, located near Waynesboro, Ga. Any new nuclear units pursued by Georgia Power at the Plant Vogtle site would need certification approval by the Georgia Public Service Commission. Both Southern Nuclear and Georgia Power are wholly owned subsidiaries of Atlanta-based Southern Company.

Miller also will coordinate Southern Company’s participation in NuStart, a consortium of utilities that has been awarded funds from the U.S. Department of Energy for the development of a Combined Construction and Operating license for a new nuclear plant.

Miller is currently the vice president of Government Relations for Southern Company and has responsibility for managing the company’s Washington office staff and the company’s efforts with the U.S. Congress and various Executive Branch agencies and officials. Miller’s replacement is expected to be named within the next few weeks.

This position at Southern Nuclear marks a return to nuclear for Miller. He joined Alabama Power in 1986 as an engineer in the chemistry and environmental support section of Nuclear Generation. He proceeded through a series of assignments at Alabama Power and Southern Nuclear prior to his assignment to Washington, D.C., in 1993 as Federal Affairs manager. During Miller’s initial assignment in Washington, he also served one year at the Nuclear Energy Institute as acting vice president of Legislative Affairs. In 1998, Miller was selected to serve as assistant to Southern Company Chairman, President and CEO Bill Dahlberg. He returned to Washington in May 1999 after being elected vice president of Government Relations. Miller is a 1983 graduate of Auburn University, where he received a bachelor’s of science degree in chemical engineering.
