Weiss Lake volunteers organize 13th Renew Our Rivers campaign April 2-7
What: The 13th annual Weiss Lake Renew Our Rivers cleanup will take place April 2-7. A community cleanup is scheduled for final day of the effort from 9 a.m. until noon at the Cedar Bluff Causeway. This Renew Our Rivers cleanup is coordinated by the Weiss Lake Improvement Association. In 2011, nearly 1,900 volunteers removed more than 15 tons of debris from the lake. More than 300,000 pounds have been removed from Weiss Lake during volunteer cleanups since 2000. Overview: Volunteers for Renew Our Rivers, one of the Southeast’s largest river cleanups, have collected more than 12 million pounds of trash and debris since the program’s inception in 2000. This year, 29 cleanups are planned through October on the Alabama, Black Warrior, Cahaba, Chattahoochee, Coosa, Mobile and Tallapoosa rivers. Directions: The public can collect trash anywhere along Weiss Lake’s 450 miles of shoreline. Volunteers can get trash bags, T-shirts and gloves at the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce office in Centre. Dumpsters will be placed at Leesburg Landing, the Cedar Bluff Causeway on Highway 9 in Centre and at John’s Grocery at the intersection of County Road 31 and Country Road 22. Contact: Volunteers should contact Shad Ellis at 256-927-7172 or visit www.weisslakeimprovementassociation.org for more information. |
