April 14 marks sixth Renew Our Rivers volunteer campaign on Cahaba River

 

What:              Renew Our Rivers volunteers will coordinate the seventh annual cleanup of the Cahaba River on April 14. Participants will meet at the Piper Bridge boat ramp at 8 a.m. and remove debris until noon.

                        This Renew Our Rivers cleanup is coordinated by the Friends of the Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge. In 2011, 91 volunteers removed more than 1.5 tons of debris from the river. More than 28,000 pounds of trash has been removed from the Cahaba River during volunteer cleanups since 2007.

Overview:      Volunteers for Renew Our Rivers, one of the Southeast’s largest

river cleanups, have collected more than 12 million pounds of trash and debris since the program’s inception in 2000. This year, 29 cleanups are planned through October on the Alabama, Black Warrior, Cahaba, Chattahoochee, Coosa, Mobile and Tallapoosa rivers.

Directions:     From Birmingham, take Interstate 20/59 toward Tuscaloosa. Take a left off of Exit 97 onto Highway 11. At the flashing light, take a left onto Highway 5. Travel 9 miles and take the second West Blocton exit at the flashing light onto Blocton Bypass/Cahaba River Road/County Road 24. Travel 5 miles to the Piper Bridge boat ramp.
