Mississippi Power fully restores electric service to customers following Hurricane Isaac

GULFPORT, Miss. – Mississippi Power restored electric service to 100 percent of its customers who could receive power just before midnight Thursday following the outages caused by Hurricane Isaac. Nearly one third of the company’s total customers were impacted from service interruptions.

“First and foremost, I want to thank our customers for their patience, and the Mississippi Power crews for their outstanding work,” said President and CEO Ed Day.

Unlike many storms which quickly pass, Hurricane Isaac was very unique in that its gusty winds and rain slowly crept through Mississippi and seemed to hover at times causing intense flooding. The prolonged winds and standing water physically prevented crews in many areas from repairing downed lines and assessing damage.

During and after a storm, Mississippi Power’s goal is to meet and exceed customers’ needs and expectations by restoring electric service as quickly and safely as possible. Despite hazardous weather conditions, the company reached their goal without any injuries or accidents to crew members.

“We remain as committed today to putting our customers at the center of everything we do as we were nearly a century ago when the company was created,” Day said. “We persevered until we got the lights back on, and now as we each go back to our daily lives, we look forward to providing clean, safe, reliable and affordable energy for the next century.”

Mississippi Power, a Southern Company subsidiary, serves approximately 186,000 customers in 23 southeast Mississippi counties.
