Gulf Power Company customers can save up to $150 annually on their electricity bills and get $35 from Gulf Power just by recycling their outdated refrigerators and freezers.

October is Energy Awareness month and Gulf Power wants to encourage customers to get rid of that extra refrigerator and/or freezer in the garage. With a single phone call for customers who choose to recycle, Gulf Power makes it simple and convenient to participate in the refrigerator-recycling program that offers a $35 incentive and free home pick-up.

Typically kept in garages as an extra refrigerator, these appliances are often so old and outdated that they consume as much as three times more energy as newer, more energy-efficient refrigerators and freezers.

In addition, recycling an outdated refrigerator repurposes more than 188 pounds of materials such as foam, glass and metal for future use. Converting the 10 pounds of foam found in a single refrigerator can produce 150 kilowatts of electricity, and recycling your refrigerator or freezer has the environmental impact of removing two cars from the road for a year. 

“This program is all about using energy wisely, saving money and protecting the environment by keeping these large appliances from wasting space in garages and landfills,” said Natalie Smith with Gulf Power.

Labor and transportation is provided free of charge. Both refrigerators and freezers are eligible for the recycling program. There is a limit of two units per household, and the appliances picked up must be in working order with an inside measurement of 10 cubic feet or more.
