The Alabama Power Foundation is awarding 24 Good Roots grants totaling more than $20,000 to plant trees across Alabama.

Good Roots is coordinated with the Alabama Urban Forestry Association and awards funds to purchase trees for cities, towns and nonprofit organizations. Good Roots is designed to help keep communities beautiful and vibrant, said John Hudson, president of the Alabama Power Foundation.

“The Alabama Power Foundation is dedicated to strengthening the communities we serve,” said Hudson. “Grant programs like Good Roots help us in that effort by providing support for local organizations to achieve their goals.”

The trees will be planted and maintained in public places by volunteers from each community. Communities and organizations benefiting from this year’s Good Roots grants are:

• Bay Area Food Bank in Theodore
• Bear Exploration Center in Montgomery
• Children of the Village Network in Livingston
• City of Abbeville
• City of Atmore
• City of Daleville
• City of Gardendale
• City of Geneva 
• City of Graysville
• City of Hokes Bluff
• City of Jacksonville
• City of Satsuma
• City of Talladega
• George W. Long Elementary School in Skipperville
• Jefferson Davis Community College in Brewton
• Monroe County Heritage Museum
• Montgomery Trees Inc.
• Pick Elementary School in Auburn
• Sylacauga Alliance for Family Enhancement
• Theodore High School
• Town of Silas
• Town of Sylvan Springs
• Troop 56 Boy Scouts of America in Hamilton

To date, Good Roots has awarded more than $624,000 to more than 650 cities, towns and nonprofit organizations to plant trees at schools, churches, city parks and other community locations.

Each year, the Alabama Power Foundation awards more than 1,000 grants, using non-ratepayer money. Since it was founded in 1989 with an investment by Alabama Power shareholders, the foundation has given more than $130 million through more than 20,000 grants and scholarships. Its current assets exceed $130 million, making it one of the largest corporate foundations in the state.
