The Alabama Power Foundation is making a $30,000 contribution to support families who were displaced or affected by an explosion early Tuesday in the Gate City neighborhood of Birmingham. The explosion destroyed an apartment building, killing one person and injuring eight, according to media reports. The donation by the Alabama Power Foundation will support the efforts of four local nonprofit organizations that are assisting about 15 families affected by the explosion. The Alabama Power Foundation was created in 1989 with an investment by Alabama Power shareholders. Since then, the Foundation has contributed more than $130 million to support nonprofit, community, environmental and educational initiatives across the state.
