Georgia Power reaches out to Seniors through CFL bulb giveaways

DECATUR, Ga. - Feb. 26, 2008 -- Georgia Power and Senior Connections in DeKalb County will team up to provide free compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) and energy efficiency information to seniors during visits to several neighborhood senior centers. (Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20050216/CLW066LOGO ) Georgia Power's energy services team in DeKalb County will visit Senior Connections' five centers and Lou Walter Senior Center to distribute 1,000 CFLs to seniors participating in the events. While there, the team will also discuss the benefits and cost savings associated with switching from standard light bulbs to CFLs and get participants to take the ENERGY STAR Change A Light pledge. "Educating our customers about the cost savings and environmental benefits of compact fluorescent light bulbs has been an important part of Georgia Power's energy efficiency campaign," said David Purcell, Georgia Power's assistant to the region manager for Atlanta and DeKalb County and board chair of Senior Connections. The Change A Light campaign encourages consumers to take a pledge to change at least one standard light bulb in their home to an ENERGY STAR qualified compact fluorescent light bulb. By changing one incandescent bulb to an ENERGY STAR qualified CFL, customers can save as much as $30 on energy costs over the life of the CFL. In addition to long-term cost savings, CFLs reduce greenhouse gas emissions and produce 75 percent less heat than standard light bulbs, so they're safer to operate and can reduce energy costs associated with home cooling. "These events help us empower our senior customers with an effective and easy energy efficient solution they can implement themselves to save energy and money," said Vicki Nichols, Georgia Power's product manager.
