Alabama Power Foundation announces Students to Stewards grant program
New conservation education effort part of ‘Power To Protect’

The Alabama Power Foundation is accepting applications through June 30 for its newest grant program – Students to Stewards.

The program will invest more than $30,000 a year in conservation and stewardship education through classroom curriculum, field studies and outdoor classrooms. Awards will be in two categories:

  • Curriculum: 15 awards up to $1,000 each for classroom lessons, in-the-field learning and teacher training.
  • Outdoor classrooms: two to three awards up to $7,500 each for the construction of outdoor instruction areas.

“This program is a natural extension of the Alabama Power Foundation’s dedication to transforming and improving the quality of life for the communities and families we serve,” said Matt Bowden, Foundation board member and Alabama Power vice president of Environmental Affairs.

Through a competitive application process, Students to Stewards provides support for dynamic stewardship, conservation education and outdoor classrooms to teach students about the importance of state ecosystems. The program aims to transform prevention into better habits by engaging and growing an appreciation for the state’s natural resources.

“The Alabama Power Foundation helped fund initial development of our Alabama Outdoor Classroom Program almost 15 years ago and this expansion of their support for outdoor, hands-on learning is tremendous,” said Tim Gothard, executive director of the Alabama Wildlife Federation. “Students to Stewards will provide educators and organizations new and expanded opportunities to foster in our students a passion for wildlife and conservation."

Students to Stewards is one way Alabama Power, the Alabama Power Foundation and community partners are collaborating on stewardship education and conservation projects during April. The series of partnerships – called “Power To Protect” – highlights efforts of the company and its partners to protect the state’s natural resources and teach future generations about resource and energy conservation.
