Members of the Alabama Power Service Organization are working to help build a Habitat for Humanity home that will hit the road later this month.

In a partnership with Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse, Habitat for Humanity and other sponsors, APSO volunteers will be working on the home in the parking lot of the Trussville Lowe's location. When completed, the home will be moved to Leeds, where the homeowner will live.

Construction begins July 13 and will continue through July 30. A construction kick-off ceremony will be held July 15 at noon at the Trussville Lowe's Location, just off of I-459 and Highway 11. The house will be moved the week of July 31, with a dedication to be held Aug. 9.

"We've worked on a lot of different Habitat homes, but this is really unique," says Bob Moore, the Alabama Power employee who is coordinating the construction effort. "It will be exciting to build a house in one place and see it moved to the site."

The homeowner, Dorothy Collier, has completed her required work on other Habitat homes. She's excited about the project because her new home will be near her work.

About 100 APSO volunteers will work on this project. This will be the 15th Birmingham-area Habitat project APSO has participated in.

The Alabama Power Service Organization is a non-profit, community service group made up of Alabama Power and Southern Company employees, retirees and family members. APSO was founded in 1990 and today has more than 3,500 members in 10 chapters throughout Alabama. In 1999, APSO contributed $1.2 million to charities in Alabama and posted more than 53,000 volunteer hours.
