Ninety-four teachers from across the state are being rewarded for their creative ideas in this year's Alabama Power Foundation Education Grant Program.

"We are pleased to again acknowledge the best in innovative thinking from those who play such an important role in helping shape the future of our children: Alabama teachers," said Bill Johnson, the Foundation's president. "We hope these grants will encourage more teachers to seek and discover new ways to reach and inspire children."

Since 1991, the Alabama Power Foundation has awarded more than $2 million in grants for innovative programs developed by teachers. The grants, up to $1,000 each, are open to all K-12 educators.

This year's grant-winning projects are designed to help students in a broad range of subjects, including math, science and technology, reading, foreign languages and the arts. A panel from the Peabody School of Education at Vanderbilt University selected the winners. More than 650 proposals were submitted.

"There were so many strong proposals," Johnson said. "The judges faced a very difficult task in determining the winners."

Supporting education is one of the top priorities of the Alabama Power Foundation. Since its creation in 1989, the Foundation has invested more than $50 million in community and education programs around the state.
