What: Alabama Power Service Organization volunteers and Habitat for Humanity are holding a dedication ceremony for the Donette Nicholas home in the Rock Creek area. This West Jefferson neighborhood was one of the hardest hit by the deadly tornado that struck the Birmingham area April 8, 1998. The home is the ninth Habitat for Humanity home that Alabama Power volunteers have built. She and her son have been waiting two years for a Habitat home. Alabama Power Service Organization volunteers also built the Habitat for Humanity home for Ms. Nicholas' sister, Donna Miller. Both families are tornado survivors. Ms. Nicholas helped build her own house; Habitat for Humanity requires families who receive new homes to contribute 300 hours of sweat equity on various Habitat houses. More than 150 Alabama Power volunteers have worked to construct the new home. Alabama Power provides affordable, reliable electric service to 1.3 million customers in the lower two-thirds of Alabama.
