Employees and retirees of Alabama Power and the Alabama facilities of Southern Company Services and Southern Nuclear have contributed $175,000 to the September 11th Fund, the special relief account set up to provide needed services to the victims of last month's terrorist attacks.

Employees and retirees have donated $75,000 to the fund, which is administered by the New York Community Trust and United Way of New York City. The Alabama Power Foundation is matching that amount, and contributing an additional $25,000 to the fund.

"The outpouring of support from our employees and retirees has been tremendous," said Charles McCrary, president and chief operating officer of Alabama Power. "Like Americans everywhere, our employees were shaken by the events of September 11 and moved by the efforts of those who've risked their lives and worked so hard during the rescue and recovery efforts. I am hopeful this financial donation will bring some comfort to the families of the victims."

The New York Community Trust and United Way of New York City are underwriting all the administrative costs of the September 11th Fund, meaning 100 percent of the contributions will go to aid victims and their families. Local chapters of the Energizers, the volunteer service organization made up of employees and retirees of Alabama Power and the Alabama offices of Southern Company Services and Southern Nuclear, plus their spouses, were responsible for collecting donations.

Alabama Power, a subsidiary of Atlanta-based Southern Company , provides electricity to more than 1.3 million customers across the state. During the past 10 years, the Alabama Power Foundation has invested more than $50 million in community and education programs statewide.
