BIRMINGHAM, Ala.

In the wake of this week's terrorist attack, Alabama Power President and Chief Operating Officer, Charles McCrary, today announced several initiatives for employees to express their grief and help the victims.

At noon today, a two-minute, moment of silence was observed across the company. Also, in conjunction with President Bush's call for a National Day of Prayer and Remembrance, Alabama Power invited all employees today to take time off to visit their houses of worship to offer prayers as they see fit.

The Alabama Power Foundation announced today that it will contribute $25,000 to the September 11th Fund, a special relief fund administered by the New York Community Trust and United Way of New York City. Those two agencies are underwriting all the administrative costs of the September 11th Fund, meaning 100 percent of contributions will go to needed services for victims and their families.

In addition to the Alabama Power Foundation's direct contribution, the Foundation will match employee contributions to the September 11th Fund up to $100,000. Employee contributions are being collected by local chapters of the Energizers, the company's volunteer service organization.

Alabama Power, a subsidiary of Atlanta-based Southern Company , provides electricity to more than 1.3 million customers across the state. During the past 10 years, the Alabama Power Foundation has invested more than $50 million in community and education programs statewide.
