BIRMINGHAM, Ala.
As the temperature turns colder, Alabama Power remains committed to helping those in need with their energy bills. Here are some programs supported or sponsored by Alabama Power that help Alabamians with limited incomes or special needs stay warm in the winter: Project SHARE -- Initiated by Alabama Power and the American Red Cross in 1982, Project SHARE (Service to Help Alabamians with Relief on Energy) helps pay energy bills of low-income Alabamians who are elderly or disabled. Those who wish to request assistance through Project SHARE should contact their local American Red Cross office. Those who wish to contribute to Project SHARE can check the box on their power bill, or call Alabama Power at 1-800-245-2244. Tax deductible contributions may also be sent directly to Project SHARE, c/o American Red Cross, 950 22nd St. N., Suite 750, Birmingham, AL 35203, Attention: Accounting Dept. The Alabama Business Charitable Trust Fund -- The nonprofit ABC Trust was created by Alabama Power in 1992 to supplement other energy assistance efforts. The Trust works with community action agencies and other social service organizations to help cover heating and cooling costs of low-income families and those struggling with temporary financial problems. For more information about ABC Trust programs, call (205) 257-2357. Power bill discounts -- Alabama Power will discount the monthly bills of customers receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). The company also has a program that exempts certain low-income families headed by older or disabled adults from paying the state utility license tax portion of their power bill. Special services -- Alabama Power also provides a number of programs for customers with special needs. They range from alternate payment dates for people who rely on monthly government checks, to Braille and large-print bills, to telecommunications services for the deaf. Alabama Power also will work with customers who are having trouble paying their bills on time to craft a reasonable payment plan. There are specific qualifications for some of Alabama Power's special services and programs. For more information, please call Alabama Power at 1-800-245-2244.
