The Alabama Power Board of Directors has elected Gerald L. Johnson vice president of customer service. He succeeds Marsha S. Johnson, who was recently named vice president of the company's Birmingham Division.

Johnson most recently served as manager of the Metro South Region of Georgia Power, where he was responsible for management of day-to-day operations for customer service, distribution, sales/marketing and external publics.

He began his career at Georgia Power 20 years ago and has worked in various line, staff and management positions in customer operations, accounting, power generation, governmental and regulatory affairs, and finance.

"Gerald's background and knowledge of all aspects of our business make him an ideal choice for this position," said Charles McCrary, Alabama Power's president and chief operating officer. "Serving our customers is one of the most important parts of our business, and I'm confident Gerald will continue Alabama Power's tradition of excellence."

Johnson will have responsibility for the residential and business call centers, the customer service support functions in the revenue accounting office, customer service training and all customer satisfaction research efforts for Alabama Power.

A native of Winston Salem, N.C., Johnson played professional football with the Dallas Cowboys before joining Georgia Power. He is a graduate of Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, N.C., where he earned a degree in accounting and economics. He is active in many civic organizations, including the PTA, the Civitan Club, the Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club.
